I have tin cans for different discovery topics. I set out a mat and the children sit around cross legged
(Montessori style).
I then pull out the closed tin, each of the children get to do the drum roll on the tin ( their favorite part) and we open it.
I read one or two of the books or just a couple pages depending on the class intrest, I show the flash
cards, the colored objects and I say it by name (i.e. this is a light green frog, this is a
dark green plate). They like to help me sort the colors by dark and light (when applicable).
For the texture box we collected items that matched the different texture word cards (i.e. a smooth rock,
a rough carpet, etc…)
There are DK books which are called touch and feel, the kids really like those.
You can use this ‘tin can’ concept for many topics’¦there are some good ideas in the Lakeshore
Catalog that you can use with household items.
